1. What is unidirectional flushing?

Water main flushing clears mineral deposits and sediment from water pipes by flushing water through fire hydrants.  The main difference between normal flushing and unidirectional flushing is that the crews will now control the direction and velocity of the flow in the pipes.  During the unidirectional flushing process, crews will be operating system valves to direct flow through specific pipelines.  This process usually takes longer than normal flushing as the field crew will be working in a meticulous order through the system.  

2. What should I expect when unidirectional flushing is happening in my neighborhood?

Customer in the immediate vicinity of where flushing is taking place may experience a temporary drop in water pressure.  If this does occur, please be aware that Spotsylvania County Utilities crews are diligently working to minimize any inconvenience caused to you by the flushing process.  Flushing typically Monday - Friday during the day.  

3. Can I use my water when flushing is taking place?

You can use the water while we are flushing on your street.  Please be aware, however, that the flushing process may stir up particles and sediment that may have accumulated over time in the water main.  If you use water while we are flushing you may notice discolored water.  If you experience discolored water, customers are advised to flush faucets with cold water for a few minutes until the water runs clear.  Customers should also check the water before washing white clothing.  If discoloration persists, please call (540) 507-7300, Option 1, M-F, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. or after business hours and holidays call (540) 507-7340.  

You may also experience low water pressure while flushing is taking place.  If this happens, your water pressure will return to normal once the flushing has ended on your street.  

4. How long does it take to flush each water main?

Our experience has ranged from 20 minutes to an hour or possibly longer and is dependent on a variety of factors.  Factors include the age of the water main, the type of pipe, the length/diameter of the water main being flushed, and if any sediment buildup is present.  The time is ultimately determined by the turbidity (clarity) of the water being flushed.  

5. When will unidirectional flushing take place in my area?

Message boards will be set-up one to two days in advance in the area(s) where unidirectional flushing is taking place.  You can also view the Utilities News (LINK) for more details. Generally, scheduled unidirectional flushing takes place Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the exception of holidays.
