[ARCHIVED] NEW SIGN POLICY IN EFFECT

County of Spotsylvania Virginia

Spotsylvania adopts a revised policy, eliminating any exceptions to enforcement and removal of illegal signs located in the VDOT Right of Way. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the proposal during a meeting Tuesday, February 25, 2020. Enforcement of the new sign policy begins immediately.

All illegal signs are eligible for removal, including illegal signs:

  • Located in the median
  • Affixed to traffic signal poles, utility poles or similar structures within the highway right of way; and
  • Located within the right of way that extends five feet (5’) beyond the pavement edge. For curb and gutter road sections, the edge of pavement is measured from the back of the curb. For ditch road sections, the edge of pavement is measured from the actual edge of the pavement.

The county will keep removed signs for a minimum of 5 business days before disposal to allow the responsible parties the opportunity to reclaim their property. In order to claim the return of a sign, fill out the litter collection form on the public works website. The form can be accessed via the Public Works main page – there is a hot link button in the center of the page “report roadside litter” https://www.spotsylvania.va.us/718/Public-Works

The county will issue notices of violation to responsible parties and pursue enforcement of sign violations.

A previous exception to the county’s sign policy did not allow for removal of signs located in the VDOT Right of Way along roadways from noon Friday to noon Monday. The board’s action eliminates that exception.

Any questions related to enforcement may be directed to the Planning & Zoning Department at 540-507-7434 or [email protected].
