Spotsylvania County’s Department of Economic Development & Tourism along with Civil War Trails and Wilderness Run Vineyard are excited to announce the unveiling of a new sign titled “Midnight Amputation – The Complications of Civil War Surgery” with a description of the surgery and a photo of the surgical kit that was used on Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. The public is invited to attend on Friday, September 27 at 2:30 p.m. at Wilderness Run Vineyard/1781 Brewing, 11109 Plank Road, Spotsylvania, Virginia 22553. Spotsylvania Tourism Manager and Region II Director for CWT, Debbie Aylor will speak and answer questions about the organization.
The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park will also have a small ceremony the same day at 1 p.m. at the Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center to unveil a surgical kit that belonged to Hunter McGuire, which may have been used during the amputation of Jackson’s left arm.
Civil War Trails is the nation’s largest outdoor museum with the red, white and blue bugle marker pointing to interpretive signs located in six states. The organization recently launched a new consumer page on their website https://www.civilwartrails.org/ that features an interactive, GPS-based map to help visitors find each CWT site and the wealth of amenities available in each community. The CWT program continues to grow and map requests continue to increase.
