British Pattern 1856 Enfield Saber Bayonet

  1. 1
  2. 2

Popularized by the French military in the mid-19th century, curved “Yataghan” saber bayonets such as this British model were modeled on the Turkish Yataghan saber. The distinct recurved blade allowed for a powerful chop when used as a short sword in-hand while also preserving its thrusting ability when affixed to the matching 1856 Enfield Short Rifle and allowed for far easier muzzle-loading. This model was issued to both Union and Confederate sharpshooters and Zouave units.

This example was excavated from the Chancellorsville battlefield around 1970.
