Lost Pets

If you have lost your pet, do the following:

  • File a Lost Report with your local shelter and surrounding shelters. You may file a Lost Report with the Spotsylvania Animal Shelter by calling 540-507-7459 or use our Lost Pet/Animal Report.
  • Visit your local shelter and surrounding shelters. Take a photograph of your pet with you.
  • Notify your veterinarian and other veterinarians in your area.
  • Check with your neighbors. Take a photograph of your pet with you.
  • If your pet is wearing tags from another area or if the information on the tags is not current, contact the agency that issued the tag and provide them with your current phone number and address.
  • Distribute Lost Pet flyers.
  • Contact the local newspapers’ classified sections and put an ad in the lost and found columns. Check these columns to see if your pet appears there.
  • When your pet has been found, cancel all reports.
  • Don’t give up!

Found Pets

  • File a Found Report with your local Shelter and surroundings shelters. You may file a Found Report with Spotsylvania County Animal Shelter by calling 540-507-7459. Select the appropriate species of the found pet {Dog, Cat, Other} to file a found report via email.
  • Notify veterinarians in your area.
  • Check with your neighbors.
  • Attempt to trace any identification the pet may be wearing. Look inside the ears and on inner thighs for possible tattoos. The pet may have a microchip that can be read with a special device available at most veterinarians.
  • Distribute Found Pet Flyers.
  • Contact the local newspaper, The Free Lance Star, at 540-373-5000. The newspaper will run a Found Ad for two days free of charge. Check the lost columns to see if the animals are in the Lost Ads.
