About Interactive GIS Mapping

What can this do for me?

Objectives of the GIS Web Site:

Provide citizen and business access to the County’s GIS mapping data

Spotsylvania County has been collecting and maintaining a variety of mapping data that is used daily by county employees.  The GIS web site makes this data available to the Spotsylvania County citizens and businesses.  Having this information available on-line will provide answers to a variety of questions which often times will eliminate the need to make a trip to the County offices.

Ability to research current and historical spatial (mapping) data

The data on the GIS web site is searchable.  A user can search for data by address, street name, school name, tax map number and a variety of other attributes. In addition, historical aerial photos from 1938, 1952, 1962, 1974, 1995, 2002, 2007 and 2009 are available on the site. These features allow a user to conduct a research by identifying the spatial relationships of the data.

View and analyze aerial imagery of the county

The State supports an aerial imagery program whereby the entire state of Virginia is flown every four years.  The State makes this data available to the cities and counties.  Presently the GIS web site contains aerial imagery from 2009.  Spotsylvania County will be flown again by the state in the spring of 2011.

Access to tax parcel information in map and tabular form

The County tax maps are available in digital form on the GIS web site.  A user can locate a parcel by entering in the street address or the tax map number.  The site will zoom to the tax parcel and display a host of information about the parcel.

View and analyze Zoning maps and data

Up-to-date Zoning data is available on the GIS web site.  This color coded information shows each of the zone types and can be viewed in relationship with other data layers including tax parcels, aerial imagery or even historic districts.

Ability to print color map

The GIS web site has a print function that allows the user to print the map that is presently being viewed.  The print function will support map sizes of 8 ½ x 11, 8 ½ x 14, and 11 x 17.  The site will work with whatever printer or plotter is configured to the computer that is accessing the site.

Ability to view and analyze a plethora of environmental mapping data

County employees work daily with a variety of environmental data.  As such, the GIS Division has been collecting and maintaining this data which is now available on the GIS web site.  Layers such as Resource Protection Areas (RPA’s), 100 year flood zones, soil data, watersheds, streams/rivers and even river overlay districts can be view and analyzed in relationship to other layers such as tax parcels or building footprints.

Ability to make linear measurements

The GIS web site has a measurement function that allows a user to measure the distance between two or more points.  This feature provides the capability to determine, for example, how far your home is to the nearest fire hydrant or how far you jogged around the neighborhood that day.

Ability to identify your voting district and precincts

Data layers containing voting districts and voter precincts are available on the GIS web site.  Having this data available allows a user to enter their address and have the voting district and voter precinct, including the address of the polling place displayed.
