Accepted items include: gasoline, paint thinner, paint, cleaning solvents, pesticides, poisons, fertilizers, varnishes, stains, sealers, automotive fluids, coal tar products, creosote products, medicines, photographic chemicals (developers, fixers, etc). Proper use, storage and disposal of these items is vital for the safety of your family and the environment.
Items that CAN be poured down the drain inside your home, if you are on the County Water & Sewer systems (DO NOT pour down storm drains or in septic systems):
ammonia based cleaners (Windex, Glass Plus, etc)
drain cleaners (Drano, Liquid Plumber, etc)
most bathroom cleaners (Pine-Sol, etc)
Items that can be disposed of, along with the regular trash:
empty containers of any kind
alkaline & carbon zinc household batteries
solidified Latex paint (remove lid and allow to solidify. If necessary, add commercial waste paint hardener - available at most paint/home stores).
How can I reduce the amount of hazardous wastes in my home?
1) Use alternatives to hazardous products (i.e. natural cleaners - baking soda, vinegar, ammonia, etc.)
2) Read the label. Investigate the product's dangers before you make the purchase.
3) Buy only what you need to get the job done.
4) Share or donate unused portions with family, friends, charity, etc.
5) Remember - the County offers year around recycling collection for waste oil, kerosene, antifreeze and propane tanks.
