Building Department

The Building Department is responsible for ensuring public health, safety, and welfare as they are affected by the design, construction, and use of buildings.  The department reviews all plans for compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.

The Spotsylvania County Code (Chapter 5) requires that a building permit be obtained from the Building Official to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, convert, or demolish any building or structure in Spotsylvania County.  Permits are also required for the installation of fuel, oil, gasoline, and bottled gas tanks.  Enforcement against unsafe structures is also done through the Building Official.  These regulations are designed to make certain all buildings and structures meet safety construction standards in order to protect property owners.

Applications for all permits are filed at the Permit Intake Counter, at 10304 Spotsylvania Ave. on the 4th floor.  The application should contain a general description of the proposed work, its location, and the use and occupancy of the building.  No construction may begin until the application is approved and fees have been paid.  No building or structure can be occupied until a certificate of occupancy has been issued by the Building Official and Zoning Administrator.  The certificate of use and occupancy is required for all buildings and structures or when there is a change of use of any building or structure.
